Hello my name is Shannon Amidon and I am an artist who cannot draw. It’s hard to admit, but I have never had any natural ability at drawing. Why bother I tell myself, I have my photography, encaustic, assemblage, etc. I have friends who are amazing illustrators, I will never be able to draw like them, I don’t need to know how to draw, there are lots of great artists and creators who do not draw: These are some of the excuses I have made plus many more.
Well I have decided all of that is going to change. One of my New Year’s goals/resolutions is to learn how to draw. It’s scary and intimidating but it is good to feel those things sometimes. Yes, I will probably suck for a long time, but in some way I think it will add to my creative process. Maybe it will even enhance my artwork and even push me to think in different ways. I am sure there are some of you out there who think it’s silly that I am afraid to draw but it’s just something I have always been intimidated by and resistant to. Even writing this post and admitting I cannot draw is a little daunting.
So I have gotten a few good recommended books. The first I am starting out with is “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”. I went out and got a nice crisp sketch book, pencils and all materials needed and I am ready. I may even post some of my progress if you promise not to make fun of me ;)
